Hazen High School Renovations and Auditorium Project
In 2001, the Renovations and Auditorium Project for Hazen High School was being constructed. During this addition and renovation, the electrical contractor noticed several mis-wired transformers. Several low voltage (120 Volt) conduits were dug up and they showed extreme corrosion and signs that electrolysis had occurred. These discoveries were serious enough to require a building wide Power Quality and Electrical Equipment Survey.
PowerStudies, Inc. was hired to perform this survey. The survey was broken up into two phases. Phase I included inspection of the panelboards, switchboards, and transformers. After the grounding, bonding, and shorted circuit problems were fixed, Phase II will begin with the testing of receptacles.
Power Quality Specialists from PowerStudies, Inc. inspected and surveyed the existing panelboards, switchboards, and transformers in the facility. An Equipment Inspection form was completed for each piece of equipment inspected. In many instances, photos were taken of the problem.
The various maintenance and code violations were then entered into a computer database, which produced a Power Quality Problem Report Form. This form details the problem, lists code references, and in some cases, suggest ways to correct the problem. Many of the reports have pictures showing the problem or piece of equipment. This form can be given to the electrician to complete when the problem is corrected.
The Power Quality Specialist found over eighty different problems ranging from missing panelboard directories to mis-wiring of separately derived systems. Many of these problems can affect the proper operation of computers, printers, servers and other sensitive electronic equipment.
